Stage Whispers and Champagne Sips: A Day at the Reimagined Theatre Royal Drury Lane

Every day is National Theatre Day for us. But you’d be assuming correctly that we’re celebrating anyway. We spent a day amongst the gilded interiors of the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane – or simply ‘The Lane’ as it’s affectionately known. With its well-earned reputation of theatre legends and lore rivalled only by its illustrious history, there’s much to be said about a building that survived a Blitz bombing, a fire and two demolitions – just to arise from the ashes every single time.

A spectacle just as much off the stage as what’s on it – The Lane’s 2019 refurbishment has reimagined what a day at the theatre looks like. Orchestrated by Andrew Lloyd Webber – the theatre now offers everything from backstage tours to afternoon tea. With iconic saloons, magnificent Georgian rooms and a champagne bar inspired by the Roman Pantheon, it’s hard not to conjure up images from an opulent, distant age.

We joined the echelons of high society for a full tour, and indulged in the ceremony of an afternoon tea – the only afternoon tea that’s served within a theatre in London. For a whole new experience of theatre, head down for a day of flair, flamboyance, and a newfound appreciation for what the arts have to offer.

The new Regency Afternoon Tea is priced from £59 per person.
Vegan, gluten free and kids options are available, and you can upgrade to Champagne Afternoon Tea on arrival. Book online here.
